"Much of this work is a memorial to the once important relationship we humans had with technologies that are now dying.
When my dad died in December 2010, I inherited the slides on which he documented the life of our family for three decades. Creating art with slides gave me the feeling of weaving our family back together again. It evokes foggy memories of the space that once was and about the not-so-empty void that still exists after losing a loved one.
The film edges cut the thread when I stitched them together, now the buttons mom and I accumulated over 40 years now serve to protect the thread from the film and provide another layer of pattern and meaning. It became a blanket of comfort and life, like my grandmother's quilts made from old clothing. Each piece of the quilt fabric represented a time, a place, and a person like each slide and each button.
The grid creates a rhythm like the calendar. The purpose for this work is to talk about us as humans, our relationships, and the time in which we live. I rescue memories and relationships in my art and I hope it will serve to represent us, to viewers in the future. The obsolescence of once important technology will provide an ongoing theme for my art work. "
